Total defense

Total defense is an activity that is needed to prepare Sweden for war. During the highest state of readiness, total defense is all activities that must be conducted at that time. Total defense consists of military defense and civil defense. The overall goal of total defense shall be to have the ability to defend Sweden against armed attack and protect our security, freedom, independence and freedom of action. Activities within total defense shall be able to be conducted individually and together with others, within and outside the country. Emergency authorities

60 government agencies are so-called emergency response agencies. These are agencies with particular importance for society's crisis preparedness and total defense. The agencies must have a good ability to resist threats and risks, prevent vulnerabilities, handle peacetime crisis situations and carry out their tasks during high alert. The 60 consist of 21 county administrative boards and 39 central agencies.

European Defence Agency (EDA)

The European Defence Agency was established in 2004. It helps the 27 Member States (all EU countries) to develop their military capabilities. It promotes cooperation, develops new initiatives and solutions to improve defence capabilities and assists Member States wishing to develop a common defence capability.

The purpose of the European Defence Fund (EDF) is to promote the development of a strong, competitive and innovative European defence industry.

Voluntary defense organizations

Voluntary defense organizations (FFO) have existed for more than 100 years and play an important role in Sweden's crisis and war preparedness. There are 18 voluntary defense organizations in Sweden with around 350,000 committed members of various ages. They are located at local level throughout the country. FFO has special missions within crisis preparedness and total defense and is financed by government funds through MSB and the Swedish Armed Forces.
